[news.software.b] trouble with :F: entries in sys file

drw@culdev1.UUCP (Dale Worley) (10/08/87)

We've been running news 2.11 for quite a while, first on a Vax with
Ultrix and now on a Sun. Our sys file looks like:

culdev1:net,world,comp,news,sci,rec,misc,soc,talk,mod,mit.bboard,ma,ne,usa,na,cullinet,to.culdev1,to.ll-xn,to.necntc::
ll-xn:net,world,comp,news,sci,rec,misc,soc,talk,mod,ma,ne,usa,na,to.ll-xn,!junk:L:
necntc:net,world,comp,news,sci,rec,misc,soc,talk,mod,ma,ne,usa,na,to.necntc,!junk:L:
maps:world,comp.mail.maps:F:/usr/lib/news/maps/comp.mail.maps/Batch
docs:world,news.announce.newusers,news.misc:F:/usr/lib/news/incoming-docs
junk:net,world,na,usa,ne,ma,junk:F:/usr/lib/news/new-junk

The last line is so that anything that is dropped in junk gets listed
in the file /usr/lib/news/new-junk. We have a crontab script that
picks up this file and finds the newsgroups mentioned and creates
them. (I know that this is not a wonderful system management
practice, but it keeps the manual maintenance down, and the next
checkgroups message will clean out any garbage groups that get
created.)

This mechanism worked fine on the Vax. However, it seems to be
breaking on the Sun. (Perhaps because of bad patching?) In
particular, the file generally gets the *wrong* file names in it. In
this case, absolutely none of the file names are in junk, and none of
the new messages in junk are listed in the file. (And the number of
entries in the file is wrong, too, so it's not just substituting one
filename for another.) We have the same problem with the 'docs' line
in the sys file, also.

Does anyone know what's going on?
