The 'checkgroups' control message should have some sort of header about which sets of groups it controls. Thus, the ordinary checkgroups message would have a line saying that it controls comp, rec, misc, etc. But it would also be possible for the alt.* backbone to distribute a checkgroups message that would controll its newsgroups, etc. (My apologies if the news software already does this.) Geoff and I have sketched a more general solution but it's not in the alpha release.
