Take a look at the first reference in the "References:" line below. False alarm. News software didn't break that. The person -- much like yourself (no slur meant!) who edits out the ">" preceeding included text to get around the line inclusion limits. If you look at 2447@hall.cray.com, you'll see that the poster did the same thing you did... CHanged ">" to "|". Unfortunately, it caught the ">" in the Reference line also (the first one). Proof??? Well, check the "In article ....." line -- text not header -- in the same message. The sender did something like: 1,$s/>/|/ Cancel BOGON ALERT. Fred

It is probably the result of someone@sdeggo doing an F in rn, and, not wanting to get bitten by the "user included more text than new text" defense mechanism of 2.11 inews, did a global replacement of all `>' with `|'. -- Karl

As several people have already pointed out to me, the most probable cause of the problem was somebody doing a "1,$s/>/|/" to get around inews's line counting "feature". -- Roy Smith, {allegra,cmcl2,philabs}!phri!roy System Administrator, Public Health Research Institute 455 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016
