[news.software.b] dealing with unknown newsgroups

roy@phri.UUCP (Roy Smith) (07/19/88)

We're running bnews 2.11, patchlevel 14. If an article comes in,
posted to some groups and that we get and some that we don't (for example,
to alt.config and news.groups), the artilce gets posted locally without any
problems, to the groups that we get.

However, if I follow up to that article, and don't do anything about
changing the Newsgroups: line, the article gets junked, with inews
complaining that alt.config is not a valid news group. Would it not make
more sense to simply post the article to those groups which are valid (i.e.
news.groups) and leave the header alone? Why should a locally generated
article have its Newsgroups: line subject to closer scrutiny than a remotely
generated one?
