[news.software.b] My RN does not handle Cross-Postings!

mdorion@cmtl01.UUCP (Mario Dorion) (12/06/88)

I started using Rn a few weeks ago moving from vnews. I like Rn pretty much
except that it does not handle cross-postings. Well, I know it's supposed to,
so, I guess I screwed. Can someone tell me what have I done wrong?

I'm using version 4.3.1.4 patchlevel 40 on a system V.

I hate to say this, but I am having the same problems. When I
turn on Debugging, the XRef handler tells me that the system in the
article header doesn't match the system I am on ( it does ). RN has a
null system name for my system, even when the system name is hardcoded
in.

Can anybody pass along any clues, or should I wait for RN 5.0?
BTW, my system is Microport System V/AT, System V Release 2 based.

Your news software must be compiled with DOXREFS whether you're
using 2.10.x (and have installed the patches in the rn source area) or
2.11 (which has such support already present).

[Karl mentions you need DOXREFS to have rn take care of cross-postings]

Perhaps it is just me or nntp, but we have compiled 2.11 with DOXREFS and
I _still_ see cross-posted articles more than once from time to time. It
might be worth actually listing the articles affected and see if something
funny is going on. I'd be interested in hearing particulars from anyone
else with this problem who has in fact used the XREFS code. Perhaps a
multiple posting problem? Did DOXREFS fix the original poster's problem?

In rn you can use the "v" command to see all of the headers (try it
now!), including the Xref: line, if any. I run news 2.11 with DOXREFS
and the only problems I see are with multiple postings, where diff
shows different message IDs (often consecutive) in the two
instantiations of the article.

Also noteworthy is the fact that the (c)atchup command in rn does
*not* track down cross-posted articles and mark them as read in other
newsgroups. This is particularly noticeable in misc.wanted and
misc.forsale, which people seem to frequently cross-post between for
some reason.

Make sure that your News system is compiled with DOXREFS defined.
