[news.software.b] remote rn problems on a Sequent Symmetry

nagel@blanche.ics.uci.edu (Mark Nagel) (01/07/89)

After upgrading to a Symmetry (Dynix 3.0.12), rrn started acting
strange. Specifically, it will fail to execute shell scripts at
seemingly random times. The problem occurs for certain people in
certain newsgroups, but not for others. For example, user X tries to
followup a message and rrn tries to execute Pnews. The shell command
is not executed, but rrn acts as though it was. The behavior can be
repeated for the same person in the same group, but it works fine for
another person, or even the same person in a different group. I've
traced the execution with dbx and found nothing. The function doshell
is called with all the correct arguments, the exit status is fine,
etc., but the script did *not* execute! If anyone else has run across
this and solved it, please lend me you wisdom. This is very
frustrating.
