[news.software.b] History file missing in B 2.11

tim@fortytwo.UUCP (Tim Baker) (10/05/89)

I sent a message several days ago but after I sent it news was down
for a day, so I may have missed a response. I will repost my question.

We have recently upgraded to B news version 2.11. We are a USG site running
UNIX system 5.

The error message we are getting is:

Cannot open /usr/lib/news/history (r): No such file or directory

I have monitored the news directory and news is not keeping a history file.
We do have a history.d directory but no history file.

If anyone has any ideas on this, I would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Somewhere along the line, the configuration information got messed up. The
"history" file is part of BSD Unix, when dbm exists. Since USG Unix SysV
doesn't have that, it creates a history.d directory containing 10 files,
numbered 0 through 9. It is in these 10 files where history is kept.

I used to be on a Berkeley system, but just recently brought up news on a
386 PC, running SysV Unix. The configuration seemed to get everything
correct. Try and determine which module is getting it wrong. If it happens
when posting news, inews will be the culprite. But it is made up of several
modules.

Sorry that this is a generalization, but hopefully it will lead you in the
right direction.
