[news.software.b] postnews pl 18/19 Corrupts Active File

tkevans@fallst.UUCP (Tim Evans) (11/26/89)

I've recently installed news 2.11 B on two separate (and different
systems) and have had the same problem. I'm doing patchlevel 18
on Microport SysV/AT (see my prior posting on other problems here)
and patchlevel 19 on 4.2BSD. On both systems, 'postnews' corrupts
the active file by scrambling the digits of the pending and read
columns. First, it drops the blank space between the two columns,
leaving a single string of digits and second, it seems to rearrange
the remaining digits.

Any help appreciated.

I recently posted a question under the above heading. This is to say
thanks to the couple of people who nicely pointed out that I'd forgotten
to 'make update' after compiling and installing the update. (In my
ignorance, I assumed that 'make update' merely ran a checkgroups.)
