[news.software.b] Active file weirdness

nash@ucselx.sdsu.edu (Ron Nash) (06/01/90)

I am running Cnews and BSD 4.3. I have my pathnames problem fixed.
Thanks for the comments. My problem with my active file and history
files still persists. I believe the problem is somehow related to
my UUCP feeds, as the problem did not exsist before picking them up.
I wrote a shell script to delete any duplicate Message-ID's. After
deleting all of the duplicates, I ran mkhistory and resumed news.
All was well until I recieved some UUCP articles. If I sort my active
file you see:

% sort -n +1 -2 ~news/active
csu.news.adm 00000 00001 y
(deleted...)
soc.rights.human 65083 64903 y

I have some groups with some very odd numbers. These were "normal"
yesterday before I resumed news. Last night I greped ca.wanted from
the errlog and log files:

ca.wanted:

From ~news/errlog:
May 31 13:36	<189@btr.UUCP>	inews: found bad ngsize 238302382 ng ca.wanted, setting to 1

From ~news/log:
May 31 13:36	crash	received <26653BBF.11359@paris.ics.uci.edu> ng ca.wanted,misc.wanted subj 'Female Roommate Wanted, Redondo Beach Area' from dbainbri@ics.uci.edu (David Bainbridge)
May 31 13:36	crash	received <189@btr.UUCP> ng comp.dcom.modems,misc.wanted,ca.wanted subj 'Re: WANTED: Public access UNIX' from cs@btr.UUCP (Customer Service cs@btr.com)
May 31 13:36	crash	found bad ngsize 238302382 ng ca.wanted, setting to 1

It is odd that the article numbers reverted to 2. But there is more
strange happenings:

% ls /usr/spool/news/ca/wanted (last night)
./ 202384 2351 2355 2359 2366 2371 2378
../ 202385 2352 2356 2360 2367 2372 2379

202383 202387 2354 2358 2364 2370 2377 2383

% ls /usr/spool/news/ca/wanted (today)
./	202384	2351	2356	2362	2370	2378	4	8
../	202385	2352	2357	2364	2371	2379	5	9
10	202386	2353	2358	2366	2372	2380	6	902390
2	202387	2354	2359	2367	2373	2383	7
202383	202388	2355	2360	2368	2377	3	702389

Does anyone have any ideals what is going on? Help!
