[news.software.b] Need info on latest nntp/rn/rrn; Starting client support

abair@nimitz.sps.mot.com (Alan Bair) (07/19/90)

I am in the process of expanding the support for News within our organization.
We already have an nntp server along with B News, which is controled by an
associate. Yes, I know B News is old, he will be updating to C News shortly.
I currently use GNUS 3.12 to read news via nntp. Others use rn on NFS mounted
/usr/news. We would like to eliminate all mounting of /usr/news.

I have a copy of the nntp/rn/rrn source, but would like to make sure I have
the latest versions before I start building and distributing. The rn appears
to be version 4.3 and nntp is version 1.5. I will be supporting both Sun
OS3.5, 4.x and Apollo SR10.x.

From the posting about patch 47, I apparently do not have the latest code.
I have also read in the comp.sys.apollo that there are problems with News
on the Apollo. So I would like to know what the latest versions are. If
there are any interdependcies between C News, nntp and rn/rrn. Does the
latest version of rn/rrn work out of the box on the Apollos or do I need
some extra patches for it. A mail archive server for sources for would
be most appreciated, we only have limited UUCP and no direct ftp access.

Please email any response unless you think this information would be of
general interest.

Thanks,
