[news.software.b] Segmentation fault in Pnews invoked from rn...

stealth@caen.engin.umich.edu (Mike Pelletier) (10/30/90)

I'm having a very peculiar problem on the Apollo with rn and Pnews.
Whenever someone tries to followup to an article, they get all the
way through the process of running Pnews, and right at the point
when Pnews tries to do "inews -h < article_file", it fails
with a segmentation fault, ie, "Pnews: [14211]: Segmentation fault".

However, when you run Pnews outside of rn, or type the command
"inews -h < .article" after having Pnews prepare the article,
it works flawlessly.

This is the first time I've ever seen a segmentation fault from
a shell script...

Any ideas, anyone? My users are getting cranky...

I have seen this problem before but have yet to figure it out. It happens
when I use Configure in the perl package, running BSD csh (actually Configure
switches itself to sh). If I run the perticular command that caused seg.
fault (I turn on set -x to find out), no problem. If I run Configure in
/sys5.3/bin/sh, no problem either.
