[news.software.b] Regional distribution/heirarchy conflict

nsayer@uop.edu (Nick Sayer) (11/27/90)

This has been brought up before, but if someone could please mail any
info, I would appreciate it.

Software is B-news 2.11.19

Many regions, for example, California, the Bay Area, Sacramento,
etc. have designated distribution codes to keep messages within
an applicable area. Some regions also have regional heirarchies
under the same name. Is there a way in B-news' sys file to designate
a certain system as being within the regional distribution, but
keep it from being fed the regional heirarchy?

I have tried:

foo:world,na,usa,ca,!ca.*, ....
foo:world,na,usa,ca,!ca., ...
foo:world,na,usa, [leave out ca] ...
foo:world,na,usa,ca,...

The first two are equivalent to the last, which results in both
the heirarchy being fed and the distribution working. The third
doesn't feed the heirarchy, but of course any articles with
the distribution set to ca won't be fed.

IMHO, the first example should work (or be MADE to work).

I have not tried:

foo:world,na,usa,ca,!ca, ...

(but THAT can't be right, can it?)

Close. I did this some years ago, but my notes are on the systems I
was fixing... I *think* the incantation is ca,!ca.all but don't flame me
if I haven't remembered it quite right.

The "one true answer" may be to run dynafeed, and select groups and
distributions individually. This runs up the overhead on your feed,
though.

VMS is a text-only adventure game. If you win you can use unix.

Bill Davidsen is correct. Use "ca,!ca.all" in your B News sys file to
send articles with "ca" distribution, but not the ca.* newsgroups.
For some reason probably lost in antiquity, B News sys files use "all"
when they mean "*".
