[news.software.b] problem with sys file

weyh@ladwp.UUCP (Darwin C. Weyh) (04/13/90)

I have a problem with my sys file. I don't have much room and need to
cut out some newsgroups. I only want some of the alt. subgroups and I
don't want the amiga and atari stuff. I end up with hundreds of
articles in my junk ng that should have been rejected. Here is my sys entry:

ME:world,comp,sci,news,rec,misc,alt.fishing, \
alt.great-lakes,alt.hackers,alt.sources,alt.hackers,na,usa,ca,la, \
!comp.sys.amiga,!comp.sys.atari,!comp.binaries.amiga,!comp.binaries.atari, \
to::

This is all on one line. I still get stuff for other alt ngs and the
atari and amiga ngs in my junk ng.

Does someone have a manual on the sys file, also is there a line length
limit.

thanks in advance

I'm having trouble getting my sys file to work the way I want, locally
we have to sets of groups one of which is for information to go to customers
and the other for internal discussion. The customer groups are ingruk.ibbs.*
and I want only this part of the ingruk hierarchy sent to the customer
bulletin board. To achieve this I have the follwoing sys file which I thought
should work :-

	ME:all,!bionet,!nlnet,!biz,!hsv,!psu,!pubnet,!u3b,!ca,!ba::
	swindon:all:F:/usr/spool/news/batch/swindon
	ibbsuk:ingruk.ibbs.all:F:/usr/spool/news/batch/ibbsuk

Currently no articles sent to the ingruk.ibbs hierarchy are queued to
send to the customer bulletin board (ibbsuk). The software is CNEWS patched
upto the December 15 patch (thanx to everyone who sent me patches). If anybody
can tell me what I'm doing wrong or point me in the directioon of the right
part of the "fine manual" I would be grateful.

PS
as well as the ingruk newsgroup hierarchy there is also a ingruk
distribution, I don't think that will make any difference, but you can't have
too much info.

Try this instead:

	ibbsuk:ingruk.ibbs/all:F:/usr/spool/news/batch/ibbsuk

You don't need the ".all" unless you want to send the subgroups but exclude
ingruk.ibbs itself. And you do need a distribution subfield -- following
the slash -- or stuff will be sent only if it also has ingruk.ibbs.something
as its distribution. See relaynews(8) and news(5) for detailed discussion.
Note that the sample C News sys file takes pains to point out the explicit
use of distributions.
