[news.software.b] Cnews: error writing history file -- help!

det@hawkmoon.MN.ORG (Derek E. Terveer) (03/01/91)

My ~news/errlog files are filling up with the following pairs of lines:

relaynews: error writing `/usr/local/lib/news/Cnews/ctl/history', probably the
disk filled
relaynews: error closing history file (File too large)

Besides the obvious, what is creating this message? I have enough disk space
(i believe - unless it is an instantaneous surge of huge proportions!):

hawkmoon$ dfspace
      / :	Disk space: 2.56 MB of 14.27 MB available (17.94%).
      /usr :	Disk space: 31.26 MB of 304.00 MB available (10.28%).
      /usr/bin :	Disk space: 33.12 MB of 45.42 MB available (72.92%).

Total Disk Space: 66.95 MB of 363.70 MB available (18.41%).

My ulimit (and that of news) is pretty high:

hawkmoon$ ulimit
65535

and the files look fine, sort of:

hawkmoon$ ls -ls hist*
   0 -rw-r--r-- 1 news news 0 May 8 1990 hist
4129 -rw-rw-r-- 1 news news 2097152 Feb 28 11:30 history
   0 -rw-rw-r-- 1 news news 0 May 8 1990 history.dat
   1 -rw-rw-r-- 1 news news 103 Mar 1 00:16 history.dir
   0 -rw-rw-r-- 1 news news 0 May 8 1990 history.map
4130 -rw-rw-r-- 1 news news 2097541 Feb 27 01:57 history.o
 431 -rw-rw-r-- 1 news news 218068 Mar 1 00:16 history.pag

So what is the problem here? Can the history files be growing past the 31MBs
that i have left in /usr sometime during the night and i'm not noticicing or
something?
Actually, i wouldn't have even noticed a problem with this except that i have
seen a *few* duplicate articles that should have been screened out and i just
*happened* to peruse throught the errlog files (which i don't do too often).

The "probably the disk filled" is actually just a random stab in the dark,
not based on any solid information; Geoff really should think about
changing that message, or at least changing "probably" to "perhaps".

However, "File too large" in the close message is much more definitive.
That means your system really is complaining about a file being too
large, and that probably means you've got a problem with ulimit.

In case it escaped your attention, 2097152 is *exactly* two megabytes...
