I'm pulling my hair out over this one, folks! After running Cnews pretty successfully for a year or so an an AT&T 3B2, I replaced that with an AT&T 6386 and recompiled CNews on it. Now I regularly receive between 150-200 mail messages saying that relaynews failed with status 176, the infamous "couldn't write /usr/lib/news/history; file too large" message. Now, the strange thing is that (a) there is plenty of room in /usr and (b) my ulimit is around 10 Megs! In fact, at one point I edited "newsrun" and added all the "-d" options to relaynews, and it had no trouble in writing a 6+ MB errlog to /usr/lib/news!! And one more thin. Today, I got 174 "failed" messages but when I looked in $NEWS/in.coming/bad, do you think I found 174 files? Nope -- just 9! Any clues will be deeply appreciated. :-( Pete -- Prof. Peter J.
