[news.software.b] relaynews errors on C-News

rdc30@nmrdc1.nmrdc.nnmc.navy.mil (LCDR Michael E. Dobson) (04/10/91)

Hello *,

I am having a strange problem with one of two nearly identicle C-News
systems I administer that seems to be rooted in relaynews but I'm not
sure.

Problem #1

When posting with Pnews using any account other than "news" or "root", an
error is sent to the user and the article goes into dead.article.

relaynews: can't redirect standard stream to '/usr/lib/news/log' (Permission
denied)

log is owner/group news

Problem #2

In my sys file I have an entry to mail the contents of a single newsgroup to
a small mailing list. The articles are sent but I get the following error:

relaynews: 'PATH=/usr/lib/news/bin:/usr/lib/newsbin/relay:/usr/lbin:/usr/bin;
</usr2/news/dod/3b2/63 (mailx 3b2list)' returned exit status 037777777777

however, the articles seem to be mailed to the list.

I see similar errors for newgroup control messages, but the newgroup is not
executed.

Problem #3

since the upgrade to the 24Mar91 version of C-News, all articles deposited in
the newspool are owner/group root instead of news.

The only difference between the system where I see these problems and the one
I don't is that on the troubled system, newsrun is execle()'d from NNTP 1.5.10
while on the working system, it is run from cron in news' crontab entry.

Nothing related to this was seen in the notebook that I could find.

I suspect some problem with the setnewsids program but I'm not sure.

This is under AT&T SysVR3.2.2 for AT&T 3B2 with WIN/3B TCP/IP 3.0

THanks for any hints,

It may be me but it also has to be setuid/setgid news. If that still doesn't
work, tell the "build" script you can't do that setuid(geteuid()) thing...
