[net.lang.lisp] Lisp Benchmarks

mike@yetti.UUCP (Mike Clarkson ) (11/18/85)

I use a number of Lisp dialects on a number of machines, namely
Vax Common Lisp and Franz Lisp on Vax 8600 under VMS, and
Franz Lisp under Unix 4.2bsd on a Vax 11/750 and a 68000 box,
and wish to benchmark the various systems. Granted that benchmarking
Lisp is an extraordinarily difficult proposition, but I would like to
have some idea, if only for my own comparison. Hence two questions:

[1]	What benchmarks are widely used, and have some general acceptance?

The consensus appears to be the benchmarks by Richard Gabriel from
his book "Performance and Evaluation of Lisp Systems" from MIT.
Are there others that are widely used?

[2]	Where can I obtain a copy of the Gabriel benchmarks?

I have ordered the book which I assume has a copy of the programs
in an appendix, but would be very greatful if someone could mail me
a copy of them in the meantime, and/or post them to net.sources
if you feel it is of general interest.

Please mail me any thoughts you may have on this subject and I will be happy to
summarise for the net, along with my timings for the Gabriel benchmarks,
should someone be so kind as to send them to me.

Does anyone have a copy of the "Boyer" Benchmark from R.P. Gabriel's book
_Performance and Evaluation of Lisp Systems_ that they could e-mail to me?

I'm beginning to run a series of benchmarks on a number of different machines
(Vax 8600/VMS, Vax11/780/VMS, Vax 11/750/4.2bsd, 68010/SysV),
running Franz Lisp, Common Lisp, NIL, PSL, and Scheme, and would like to get
a benchmark suite together to evaluate the different systems. I would
also be interested in hearing from other people with their results on other
machines and dialects. I will summarise the results to the net.
