[news.software.b] NNTP & CNEWS

news@heitis1.uucp (News Administrator) (06/28/91)

I just got nntp 1.5.11 running, (only took a few hours 8). It is running on
ISC 386/ix v2.2.1, and rrn seems to work perfect, so I am very pleased with
it. Now for the hard part. I am in a strange situation. I have a machine
which can talk to the "world", but has limited disk space, and I have a
machine which because of company policy cannot talk to the world, but has
a large disk and I can use to store news. I want this system heitis1 to
talk to my feeds, and keep only a days worth on news, then have the other
get an nntp feed, and store at least a week. I have looked through all
the files which came with nntp and cnews, and can find no instructions on
how to actually set up an nntp server with the cnews system. It seems as
if both parties expected the other to tell me how to do it ;). Here come
the questions:

1) Is anyone using NNTP and CNEWS now?
2) How?
3) Do I still need to use the frontend_inews, server_inews, and
$NEWSBIN/nntp/inews files to get the darn things to work?
4) Will this still post with all the playing I have done today?

Any help would be appreciated,

	brian

I'm no expert but I don't see that anyone else has replied so....

If I understand you correctly, you want to use nntp to transfer a full
feed to the isolated host. I don't know how you have isolated this
host but it will at least have to accept an nntp connection from
heitis1 in order for this to work. You'll have to make the
nntp_access file real restrictive. Anyhow, if you were able to set up
a bidirectional feed with some host outside of your site then it
should be no problem to use the same procedures to relay the news to
the isolated host. Just edit the sys file and have nntpsend run on a
regular basis. If you're not going to allow posting from the isolated
post you could use the L flag on that host and the n or F flags on
heitus1.

I hope I haven't embarassed myself by completely missing the point.
