[net.lang.lisp] Available COMMON LISPS: The Response

klahr@csd2.UUCP (02/26/86)

My thanks to all the people who answered my request for
information on available COMMON LISPS. Many people also contacted me,
and suggested I post the replies I received, so here they are. I just want to
add that, as several people here at NYU told me, COMMON LISP is, of course,
available from DEC for a license fee to run on VMS.

The Portable Standard Lisp folks here are putting together a
Common Lisp subset that runs on top of PSL but which is nevertheless
fairly fast. It'll be cheap (<1K) and runs on Vax Unix as well
as other systems. Unfortunately, we probably won't have it
ready for another 2 months or so. If you're hot to help us
debug, we're planning to send out an "alpha release" in a couple
weeks...

VAX/LISP is Digital's Common Lisp and runs on the Ultrix-32 operating
system. I am not sure of the fee. Contact your DEC sales rep.

We have Kyoto Common Lisp here at GE. This was either free or close thereto.
It runs well, but the compiler is slow, as it produces C intermediate code,
and calls the c compiler to compile it, then loads in the results, however,
since it is written entirely in C, it does seem _very_ portable. It runs
(as far as i know) on Vaxen running Unix, on DG machines of some flavor,
on Suns (both 2 and 3 - i ported it to Sun 3's), and more ports are planned.

Good points -- portable, cheap, fast interpreted, reasonably fast compiled

Bad points -- slow compiler, and i have been having trouble in getting it to
compile Portable CommonLoops, however, that may be unfair as
PCL has been making several lisps around here unwell.

Please summarize any other responses to the net, as we are all interested
in the common lisp world out there.

Please let me know what you find. You can get Common Lisp for
a variety of UNIX machines from "Franz Inc.", but it is not free,
and I'm not sure if their price fits your definition of modest.
