[news.newsites] Grumpy != grumpy

wgh@Grumpy.UUCP (William G. Hutchison) (10/12/88)

My predecessor as Usenet administrator claimed to have registered our
site as Grumpy in August 1988, but
 (1) I do not see our site in the current maps;
 (2) There is a site att!grumpy already.

  Where do we go from here?

The problem is that, generally speaking, hostnames are
case-insensitive, that is, Grumpy == grumpy for all practical
purposes.

By analogy, our main news host is known as tut.cis.ohio-state.edu, but
the NIC has it registered as TUT.CIS.OHIO-STATE.EDU. Same place.

Sorry I cannot easily reply to you by mail, Bill, but with a site named
"Grumpy" your mail is doomed to go to "grumpy" whenever it goes through
a gateway which converts names to lowercase. Though strictly speaking there
is no problem with your site name, in practice it will not work.

I suggest you try another name...

Paul.

The real problem is that mail auto-routed to "Grumpy" will go to 'grumpy'
instead. If you specify an explicit bang path, there's no problem unless
the path happens to go thru a "rabid router", in which case you'd better
find a functional path.

Changing the name is, of course, the *right* solution.
