We have undergone MAJOR configuration changes here that will have netwide
reprecussions (hopefully for the better) and will probably change the
composition of the elusive "USENET Backbone". This is mostly due to the
relatively new availability of TCP/NNTP-based news feeds using our NSFnet
hookup and the desire of management here to use these exclusively and get rid
of expensive long distance phone-based news feeds. Here's what it looks like
(double lines indicate TCP/NNTP feeds, single lines are local phone calls;
asterisk indicates another well-connected site, others are primarily
"downstream" sites):

Needless to say, the NNTP feeds are also well-connected for mail. The complete
new map entry for hao follows. I can't wait to see the next "USENET Backbone"
map! :-) One major deletion: there is no longer a news feed between hao and
hplabs, although we will continue to maintain a mail link.
