[news.config] Path to, or map entry for, Xerox wanted

campbell@maynard.UUCP (09/11/87)

I recently received mail from someone at Xerox who replied to a posting
of mine. All my attempts to reply to this mail bounced. I cannot find
Xerox in the UUCP map. A friend of mine at another site has also had
trouble mailing to Xerox.

  (1)	Does anyone know how to get mail to Xerox? The address I have
	looks like:

		Joe_User@OsbuSouth.Xerox.Com

  (2)	If Xerox has a UUCP gateway, why aren't they in the UUCP map?

Anyone at Xerox out there?

Larry Campbell asks for a path to Xerox, specifically to:

> Joe_User@OsbuSouth.Xerox.Com

As it turns out, Xerox has a pretty nifty addressing scheme that predated
the domains junk in the ARPA world:

	<user>@<division-abbreviation-or-name>.XEROX.COM

and they're on the ARPAnet too, so you can address mail to you local
ARPA host and thence from there. For example:

	...ucbarpa!Joe_User%OsbuSouth.Xerox.Com@Xerox.Com

should work. A preferred address, however, would be:

	...ucbarpa!Xerox.Com!OsbuSouth.Xerox.Com!Joe_User

(this avoids the "!" versus "@" precedence problem, but I'm not sure if
the Xerox gateway will translate this into the appropriate format)

They ain't in the UUCP maps 'cause they ain't a UUCP site.

The primary way to send mail to people at Xerox is via the Arpanet. Xerox.Com
is our Arpanet gateway. The two main mail systems are Grapevine and NS (our
product mail system). Grapevine addresses are of the the form:

	User.Registry

To reach such addresses from the Arpanet you may use an address of the form:

	User.Registry@Xerox.COM

Larry's example should read

	Joe_User.OsbuSouth@Xerox.Com

NS addresses are of the form:

	User:Domain:Organization

where any of the three fields may contain spaces (though in mail going out
onto the Arpanet these may be translated to '_').

To reach these addresses from the Arpanet you may use an address of the form:

	"User:Domain:Organization".NS@Xerox.COM

For example, to reach my NS account you can mail to:

	"Wegeng:Wbst207V:Xerox".NS@Xerox.COM

The quotes are very important.

Further details and help can be obtained from Postmaster@Xerox.COM.

We also have a few UUCP sites, the two major ones being 'parcvax' and
'rocksanne'. Both have entries in the UUCP map. There is no public
mail gateway between UUCP and GV or NS mail.

The above discussion leaves out a lot of details that shouldn't matter
to most people. If you have problems contact Postmaster@Xerox.COM.
