[news.config] Mr. Bad Block visits Kentucky

david@ms.uky.edu (David Herron -- Resident E-mail Hack) (03/04/88)

Yesterday morning (that is, March 2nd) our kernel discovered that
a bad block had been allocated into an important directory and
it got all panicky and ended up crashing. :-) This was on the
machine that's our primary nameserver and news hub. (As well
as where my own files live!) That is ... e.ms.uky.edu [128.163.128.5].

We've spent yesterday since noon til an hour ago (it's now 9:35 PM)
reformatting the disk and backing up and restoring and we're now
back on the air. That I know of, no mail or news was lost. The
only effect on our uucp machine was that it had to be down so that
we could use it's tape drive for backups and restores. But mail
should have simply queue'd up and not been lost. (Fingers crossed
through most of this paragraph ... )

And now to debug the problem that's making my news partition run out
of inodes every couple of days ...
