The Scientific Computing Division (SCD) here at NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) is taking over the news and mail service from HAO (High Altitude Observatory, a science division). This means that the news and mail service formerly provided by the "hao.ucar.edu" machine will now be provided by the "ncar.ucar.edu" machine (whose real name, for political reasons, is "handies.ucar.edu" but the ncar alias is officially entered as a CNAME record). I am in the process of converting this over, and since it might cause some disruption to outside users I am announcing the impending change in this forum. I plan to maintain the same connectivity for "ncar" that "hao" now has (neighbors being willing, of course) except that the long-distance PHONE links (a small percentage of our traffic since we joined the Internet) will have to be dropped. Right now is the transition period; the site "ncar" is online and putting out news and mail even though there is no official map entry for it yet. The hao site is still active and will remain so until an official map update is published. I will announce in this group when the conversion is complete, and I will make sure that Gene Spafford's monthly backbone posting is properly updated at that time. --Greg
