[news.config] hao is gone

woods@ncar.ucar.edu (Greg Woods) (03/24/88)

Due to circumstances beyond my control, the plug has been pulled on the
backbone site "hao" much sooner than I expected, and without any advance
notice to me. The site "ncar" has already taken over most of hao's long-haul
net links (news and mail), but unfortunately the dial in/out capability
on "ncar" is not yet completed and probably will not be until sometime
early next week. While there is still a machine out there that responds
to the name "hao.ucar.edu" (which makes things worse), it is not the same
machine and does not even have uucp or nntp running. All my neighbors are
requested to immediately shut off news and uucp to hao, and convert over
to using "ncar" instead. My Internet neighbors already have links set up,
so all they really need to do is put an appropriate line into the L.aliases
file so that mail routed through hao will have the best chance of getting
to its destination. Everyone else should stop routing through hao and it
should immediately be marked as dead in everyone's pathalias data. The map
entry for "ncar" does appear in the latest set of comp.mail.maps postings
and all links that actually appear there are operative. We do intend to
provide the same service via "ncar" that "hao" has been providing for so
many years, and we apologize for the inconvenience this will undoubtedly
cause. But honest, it's not my fault. Flame my boss (bovet@hao.ucar.edu :-)
not me, please.
In the meantime, there are several local phone links that used to go to
hao that will not be working until sometime next week. When they are, I
will post a new map entry for "ncar" and an announcement to this newsgroup.
Again, sorry for the inconvenience. The admins of the phone links in
question can expect a call from me sometime in the next few days to arrange
for setting up a link to "ncar" (assuming your phone number can be found in
the maps).
