The machine cae780 has been shutdown without any advance warning. It will not be coming back up. Since we cannot get onto the machine to obtain a complete list of its UUCP connections this message is the only notification regarding the status of cae780. Please remove cae780 from your L.sys file. For those sites that were dependent upon cae780 for mail or news -- I'm sorry that we were unable to give you any advance warning. We don't have any other machines in the Bay area to pick up the load -- however we are willing to allow those machines that were communicating with cae780 for news and mail to call Tektronix for news and mail if any wish to do so. We are in the process of updating the UUCP map entry for both Tektronix and cae780. Since it takes a minimum of three days to propagate an update there may be some mail routing problems in the interim. Michael Edelman Postmaster@tektronix.tek.com (503) 627-6707

I thought its life as a MicroVAX was going to be longer than this. Still, thanks for all the bits. UBVAX.UB.COM has received news from cae780 since antiquity (or at least, since before I worked there). With two Trailblazer+'s, one incoming 1200, and two outgoing 1200's, it can pick up *some* of cae780's load. U-B will of course need a news feed in any case -- neighbors of cae780 are encouraged to send mail to me at <usenet@ubvax.ub.com> to see what can be arranged. -- Paul A Vixie Esq paul%vixie@uunet.uu.net {uunet, ptsfa, hoptoad}!vixie!paul San Francisco, (415) 647-7023

I find it interesting (and not especially coincidental) that at almost the exact moment this happened, CAE Systems was sold to Mentor Graphics. What Tek bought a few years ago (and overpaid for, it seems) for $75 Million got unloaded to a competitor for $5Mil. Tek basically sold CAE for scrap. Too bad. I worked at CAE for a while. Lots of neat people. Good product. I'm sorry to see it end this way. From what I can tell, most of the old line CAE people saw something coming and many got out. Hope the rest didn't get caught completely unaware. Just goes to show. A good product isn't always enough. Neither are good people. Sometimes nothing is enough. Rest in Peace, CAE. Rest in Peace.
