[news.config] OS change & downtime at *.ms.uky.edu

david@ms.uky.edu (David Herron -- One of the vertebrae) (08/09/88)

We are in the midst of converting operating systems here from MtXinu's
4.3bsd to Ultrix 2.2. [Because most of our main core of staff will be
graduating & leaving during the next year and that Ultrix is easier
to install & maintain].

As things are being converted there will of course be all sorts of
chance for mishap and confusion and mis-installing and etc. This may
cause bounced mail and/or lost news. The conversion of the mail system
is already mostly finished, and occurred with few mishaps not
explainable by staying up til 5:30 a few nights in a row :-(.

Anyway. This Thursday (11-Aug) our news system will be taken down
sometime in the early evening to be converted. (e.ms.uky.edu). We
will be making backups, repartitioning the disks, and restoring files
back to disk. THEN I will be able to recompile & install new nntp/news
binaries. (Actually I'll probably have them already compiled and
will simply need to install the Ultrix binaries).

If all goes right we should be done by sometime in the wee hours of
the morning, and definitely by Saturday when I am due to leave for
the wilds of western pennsylvania to meet up with the infamous talking
bikini ... :-)

Oh, and thanks to everyone who told me how to fix rn to run on Ultrix.
It works fine now!
