[net.periphs] 'perfect' printer wanted

hardie (10/27/82)

We have three printers (whose identity will remain secret so let's just say they
are XYZ brand). These printers are used by about 1200 students who print their
assignments (computer science stuff) and tear their own output off them.
We have had considerable trouble with these printers, partly because
they are really not designd [D[Ded for heavy duty use but also because of the serious
'finger poking' problems that arise from having 1200 printer operators. Is there
anyone out there who has a printer (or pirnters[D[D[D[D[D[D[Drinters) in this kind of environment,
which survives with[D[D[D[D[D the punishment and which dos not [D[D[D[D[D[Des not suffer from serious finger
poking problems (such as having a student change the lines per inch from 8 to 6
during a job). Another problem of this particular printer is that it has a
non-trivial method of loading a new box of papaer[D[D[Der and settin[D[D[D[D[D[Dre-setting its top-of-form.
Ideally we want a printer that meets these criteria:
- prints at least 600lpm
- has RS-232 interface
- MUST have ETX/ACK protocol (it is better than XON/XOFF or tweaking EIA leads)
- has a [Dn absolutely minimal number of buttons/switches accessible on the front panel
- upper and lower case
- 6 and/or 8 lines/inch but NOT selectable from the front panel if both are there.
- 10 chars/inch horizontally
- local form feed
- very easy paper and ribbon loading
- long life ribbon.
- designed to work in heavy-duty environment.
- cheap (!!!!!)
If you have first-hand experience with a printer that meets these criteria please
mail me its name. If you have experience with one that meets all but the last
criterion then mail me its name anyway!
	Thanks very much.
