Here's a teaser to show you why I'm asking for the "inpaths" information. The file below is a PostScript file for 8.5x11 paper that shows backbone news flows. The "backbone" is in this case defined to be the top 75 sites in terms of measured news flow (measured by the inpaths program), except that any site whose latitude and longitude aren't in the right format in the comp.mail.maps database is omitted. After choosing that "backbone", I then compute the aggregate flows, based on articles per day, between those sites. The width of a line is proportional to the importance of that flow. A flow is more important if more people's copy of an article took that path. Random question of curiosity: How do you convince your software to draw the lines where it does? That is, the basic arcs are no surprise, that's straightforward, but in this incarnation of the map, the transcontinental lazy `S' lll-winken=>uunet surprised me. Small critical point: The `noisiness' of the map is higher than in the first incarnation, when only 30-odd sites were listed. I think I preferred the more restricted version, because I could get a better feel for what was going where. There's simply too much data now. --Karl

What I find is that when I put the top 30 sites on the map, the information is easier to see but the sites that have always thought of themselves as "backbone" status which aren't in the top 30 don't like it and ask for more. When I include more, it muddies the chart a bit. If you have a PostScript printer that can print 11x17 paper (e.g. the DEC LPS40) and if you have an Internet connection (mail from me to you does not have to travel over a dialup link) I can mail you a PostScript file that shows every single news flow in all of the continental US. It is awesome. There are about 30,000 flow lines on it.

I'd have to look hard to find one of these postscript printers around here, but on the other hand I do have a 42" x whatever Versatec electorstatic color plotter with a controller that understands HPGL... You could probably arrange with rick@uunet to post the data there, where many non-internet site could get at it. I don't think too many of us have PostScript printers that can handle 11X17 but there are a lot of devices out there that can do HPGL. A D size drawing of that should be really impressive. Failing that, is there a PostScript to HPGL converter out there that would handle this? I don't think it's possible to translate these maps into HPGL. I use all kinds of features that PostScript has that HPGL just can't do--rotated letters, elongated and compressed fonts, white letters on a black background, as well as things that are tricky and space-consuming in HPGL (cubic splines). I just got a color 11x17 PostScript printer, and I'm going to try to produce some of the maps in color. Tee hee.
