[news.config] Newsreaders and lentgth of /usr/lib/news/active

george@flight.UUCP (George Rachor ) (12/05/90)

I posted this in response to a request for yet another newsgroup and
it got me thinking perhaps news gurus would have some ideas on my
ultimate solution (which is fixing either vn or rn to work right).
I am running Intel xenix 3.5 on a 286 based system 310. Any comments would
be greatly appreciated:

I don't remember any model railroader being discouraged from posting there.

I have done it several times. The only reason the traffic is only 10%
model is because that is all who posts. If more modelers were to post then
perhaps a natural splitting of the groups would occur. I seem to remember
an attempt a couple of years ago to split the group and it failed.

The only reason I am saying anything now is that the last thing my particular
news software needs right now is more newsgroups to deal with. Both of
the newsreaders I try to use (vn and rn) fail to work properly when there are
more than 700 newsgroups. I know I need to fix this but until I get time
to look at this I am stuck. Every time a new group is created I need to
decide if the new group will replace the old or be ignored.

I've decided to crosspost this to some of the news related groups. Maybe
they have the answer. Until then I reccomend using rec.railroad.
