Someone somewhere out there has started running news and/or uucp routing software on an unregistered host named "cti", and is sending out mail with an apparent return address of "cti!user" or "user@cti.UUCP". Well, as it turns out there *is* a host named "cti" in the UUCP maps, but, wouldn't you know it, it's not the same host. As a result, mail intended for users on this unregistered host is routed to the registered but definitely different host of the same name. We've heard this one before. Now, as it turns out, the registered "cti" has been off the net for about two years, and may or may not return. But that's not the point. The point is, because it is down, I know for a fact that all mail now being sent to any "cti!user" is erroneous. Most of this bogus mail seems to be from mailing lists, but there are occasionally individual mail messages going astray. If you administer a mailing list which contains an address of the form cti!user or user@cti.uucp or if you yourself are sending a mail message so someone using an address of either form, it is wrong, it isn't going through, it ends up in the bit-bucket. If you are a user on this unregistered host, please realize that because you or your administrator(s) are not following the rules, you may be missing some of the email that other people try to send your way. Please try to do it right, by registering your site name (in which case you would have found out that the name "cti" is already taken, and therefore use of that name would cause mail to be misdirected). Since I don't know a path to get to this unregistered "cti" (by definition there is no routing information for it in the UUCP maps!) I am unable to get in touch with those folks directly, or to arrange for forwarding of their misdirected mail. Too bad. Maybe they'll read this. -Eric -- Eric Black "Garbage in, Gospel out" Atherton Technology, 1333 Bordeaux Dr., Sunnyvale, CA, 94089 Email: ericb@Atherton.COM Voice: +1 408 734 9822
