[comp.text] Hopeful

UH2@PSUVM.BITNET (11/26/86)

The usual wail into the dark...

Someone over in comp.sys.amiga rumored that someone else wrote a good
Pascal to C translator, and then translated TeX. True? Available? $$$?

In paticular, for the att6300+/SV and the Amiga.

BTW, a DVI driver in an Amiga or Atari ST seems like a reasonable choice
for a screen preview station for TeX that would not put any load on the
"mainframe", no? Anybody making progress on that?

TeX for the Amiga is now available, complete with screen previewer and LaTeX!
Send me (to ROKICKI@SU-SUSHI.ARPA or ...glacier!navajo!rokicki) your name
and address, and I will rush information about the package to you by snail
mail. Alternatively, you can call me (at (415) 723-1646) or Dr. Norman
Naugle (at (409) 845-3104) and we will answer any questions you might have.

The current distribution is undergoing revision in the following ways:

-- Currently, bibTeX is not supplied. This will come with a future update.

-- The previewer only works in interlace mode. This is also being updated,
and some nifty features are being added. Currently the previewer supports
random page motion, zooming and panning, and many other features.

-- A larger set of preview fonts is being prepared. Currently you get 144
fonts---each of the 16 primary TeX fonts in 9 sizes from 83 dots per inch
    to 173 dots per inch.

-- The documentation is being expanded considerably.

TeX for the Atari is progressing; the available compilers do not work as well
as the available Amiga compilers, but it won't be long!

TeX on the Macintosh has not had any progress lately; if you need it soon, you
might call Addison-Wesley and get their version. (I feel there is a lot of
competition in this market, with two other companies already making their TeX
for the Macintosh available; I am more interested in making TeX available
than in making a lot of money.)

Feel free to call.
