For several months now we've been having problems with OPC belts on an Imagen 12/300 laser printer. Basically, it "eats" a belt once or twice a week, apparently due to some sort of mechanical problem having to do with the belt rollers. Even the slightest amount of crinkling on the edge of a belt seems to bring the 12/300 down. At the current price of belts, this is getting to be a very expensive operation. Repeated calls to Imagen re this problem haven't been of any help, though they've offered to change out our 12/300 for a 2308 for $8,000 (which we don't believe is such a great deal). Does anyone out there know if this is a generic problem with the particular model of Ricoh engine that Imagen used for the 12/300, or whether it's specific to just our own engine? -- Bob Cunningham bob@hig.hawaii.edu

We have had an Imagen 12/300 here since August 1985 and have run about 50,000 copies through it. I agree that the OPC belts are very sensitive, but ours have been holding up fine - needing only to be replaced about every 10,000 copies. We only destroyed a belt once, and that was right after we got the machine. It turns out that if you have a paper jam and just pull the paper out of the machine, you can often scratch the belt. Our service people told us that before clearing a paper jam you should remove the drawer that holds the OPC belt. You can then drag the jammed paper out of the machine without damaging anything. Hope this is useful information. -- Larry Philps Engineering Computing Facility University of Toronto Usenet: {linus, ihnp4, allegra, decvax, floyd}!utcsri!utecfa!larry CSNET: larry@Toronto ARPA: larry%Toronto@CSNet-Relay

Imagen has stopped making the 12/300 in favor of their 33xx series using the new Canon engines. They will continue to support 12/300s out in the field, but Imagen themselves are somewhat disappointed in the support they've been getting from Ricoh on the particular model of Ricoh engine used in the 12/300. In our case, Imagen has given us a fairly reasonable trade-in on our 12/300 towards the price of a model 3320---which probably better suits our needs regardless of the problems we've been having with OPC belts on our 12/300. -- Bob Cunningham bob@hig.hawaii.edu
