Several years ago, we undertook a workstation project using the LSI 11/23 CPU (in the form of the VT103) and using the 7.5 Mbyte DSD880 winchester disk + floppy. We purchased a number of these units, and have been trying to make Version 7 Unix(tm) run *reliably* on them ever since. While Unix runs reasonably well (the performance is comparable to an RL01 based 11/23 system), a large number of problems have occurred with the DSD880. The disks tend to lock up without explanation, there have been a large number of file system problems, and, in general, getting software to run reliably has been frustrating. I would like to hear from anyone else who has had any experiences with the 7.5 Mbyte version of the DSD880 with any flavour of Unix. As this information is likely to be of only very specific interest, please reply directly to me by mail at ...!decvax!utzoo!utcsstat!mario. I will forward a copy of the information received to anyone who requests one, and to the net if the number of requests warrants it.
