Has anyone yet created a Mac driver for Knuth's METAFONT program? This would consist of MF mode settings for the Imagewriter, and gf2mac programs that turn GF files into something that can be productively downloaded to the Mac. I know that TeXtures has all the Computer Modern fonts; what I want is the ability to create fonts on the Vax that I can type with on my Mac. Alternatively, can someone describe for me the exact format of a font file (as it might exist on the Unix end prior to a "macput" operation) so that if nobody has done it already, I can conceivably try to create such a driver? Thanks, as they say, in advance... Mike Urban ...!trwrb!trwspp!spp2!urban "You are in a maze of twisty UUCP connections, all alike"

Don't forget that you will have to bit-tune the fonts yourself after Metafont is through with them. At Macintosh screen resolution, there is little hope of any automatic font generator doing a really good job. Metafont tries very hard, but when characters are only a handful of dots wide, it's just not within the state of the art to get good-looking fonts from resolution-independent control information. -- Legalize Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology freedom! {allegra,ihnp4,decvax,pyramid}!utzoo!henry
