[comp.text] getting it

amit@umn-cs.UUCP (02/03/87)

I've been asked how one can get hold of the various [La]TeX packages.

Good question... I don't know about a central clearing house -- is
there one? If not, it would be real nice to have one around. I imagine
a directory that contains all the man pages, and a file that just
lists the entries, in a format similar to this:

===============
DVIDOC                dvi-to-ascii (tty) filter.

        version:      1  (Jan 1987)
        history: Modeled after dvitype, at OSU (1983).
                      Listed version was modified by Ken Yap.
        systems:      4.3bsd, at least.
        restrictions: none
        directions: internet: anonymous ftp at host rochester
                                (10.0.0.15), files
                                public/latex-style/dvidoc.shar[12]
                      uucp: ?
        size:	      100 KByte (approx)
===============

Maybe someone would volunteer to organize such a task?

In the meantime, if I had to start my search today, I'd probably
(1) follow this newsgroup and try to get archives of mod/net.text
(2) read back issues of Tugboat
(3) ask to be included in the TeX mailing list, and get TEXHAX
    files from Stanford
(4) poke around some internet sites (rochester, mity-prep, umd.edu,
    uiuc, su-score and many, many other -- internet connection and
    time permitting.)
