[comp.text] "Blackboard" Bold

elf@cui.UUCP (02/27/87)

Knuth says that plain TeX doesn't come with what he calls "blackboard bold"
letters (you know, R with two closely-set "|" (a.k.a. UNIX pipe symbol) at
left, C with a slash for the complex numbers, Z, N, and so on). He says
that the AMS distribution has them. I haven't had much luck constructing
them using \def's and the "\," and "\!" spacing commands in math mode.
I just don't have the time to learn metafont.

Can someone who has had success in defining them please e-mail them to me?
If there's interest, I'll summarise (if it's not breaking any rules).
I have had it up to here with "\Re" and {\bf R} just doesn't hack it either.

And while we're at it, the \emptyset symbol is also annoying, but at least
that's easy to override using the appropriate combination of \not, \circ,
and spacing commands.
