[comp.text] PostScript Resources

patwood@unirot.UUCP (Patrick Wood) (04/25/87)

                 PostScript-Related Products and Services

(This list is excerpted from the Premier Issue of The PostScript Language
Journal. It is Copyright (C) 1987 by Pipeline Associates, Inc. This list
may be redistributed so long as this message remains intact.)

This issue's Resources lists companies providing services and products
that are useful to PostScript programmers. We have intentionally left
out applications programs that produce PostScript (e.g. Illustrator and
PageMaker, as we feel they fall into a different catagory). We'll be
listing these types of applications programs in another issue's Resources.
You should save this column, as subsequent issues of The PostScript
Language Journal will only contain new companies and products. In the
first issue each year, we will publish a complete, up-to-date Resources.
A few notes about the listings under Typesetting Services:
+ All prices are per page.
+ All companies listed with a single price are willing to negotiate
lower prices for volume typesetting, but do so on a per-job basis.
+ Many companies with Linotronic 300 typesetters use a default
resolution of 1270 DPI. Always check with a typesetting company to
       determine the default resolution.
+ Some companies have a minimum charge, often equal to the cost of two
       or three pages.
+ Most companies charge extra for pages with complex graphics that take
more than about 10 to 15 minutes to print.
+ All companies charge a premium for overnight delivery; some also
charge for U.S. mail on small jobs.
+ Almost all companies have modems, allowing you to call up and send
your PostScript file to them. Most can handle Macintosh disks, and
some can also handle MS-DOS disks.
