[comp.text] Nroff driver problems with hp laserjet and pyramid Osx nroff.

stephenc@jcphys44.anu (Stephen Chivers) (05/05/87)

I am posting this article for David, (dmc209@cscunix.anu.oz)
who does not have access to usenet from his machine.
He may contacted by taking the most suitable address from
the set given below and replacing 'stephenc' by 'dmc209' and
'jcphys44' by 'cscunix'. If that fails try my address and i will
forward the mail.

This is my first Net article so go easy on me please. :-)

First I want to thank craig bevins for reposting the Nroff
driver program,
I for one found it very useful (although not perfect), the program seemed to
work fine except for some subtle difference between the files it generated and
what nroff here wanted (Pyramid 90X, under the Att universe).

The problem is that the driver generated causes problems at the word
break on the end of a line instead of a hyphen being inserted one of the 'early'
escape codes such as t.hlr, or t.hlf are used (with no hyphen) and this
disrupts the text.

eg. At the end of a line of word may be brok-
               en up like this.

My driver broke words up such that they appear^[=
               ed like this.

(In my usual cases a reverse half-line feed was inserted into the text
        instead of the hyphenation expected)

I have one (crude) way of getting around this and this is by using the
program to make modifications to an existing 'vanilla' driver, this works, but
I would much rather generate real drivers that weren't hacks of other things.
(The program worked perfectly on reading and displaying the existing drivers)

The nroff driver I am trying to get working is one for the
HP LaserJet+ (Courier A Font Cartridge), and I am also looking into
generating one for it using one of the proportional fonts, but naturally need
widths for the characters that are printed does anyone have this info or know
how I can get it.

Thanks in advance.

David Clarke.
