Satisfied though I am with TeX and LaTeX, there is a tool that would make things much easier for me, if it existed. I would like to be able to print LaTeX output on a dumb printer, one that does not know about different fonts, super or sub scripting, mathematical symbols or any of the other special characters common to LaTeX. Ideally I would like a dvi2ascii tool. Does one exist? I would even be willing to write one if I knew where to get information on the format of the .dvi file; does anyone know where I might a definition of what goes into the .dvi file? Any help appreciated. Peter Webb. {allegra|decvax|harvard|yale|mit-eddie|mirror}!ima!applicon!webb, ...!ulowell!applicon!webb, or ...!raybed2!applicon!webb

We are trying dvidoc, obtained by ftp from rochester. ken@rochester.arpa is the keeper. > ... does anyone know where I might a definition of > what goes into the .dvi file? That is in the source for dvidoc. Also in Knuth's book on TeX the Program. You also need a font metric file that sets up fixed-width characters, and a lfonts.tex that makes LaTeX use that font. Before trying your own, get Ken's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bruce Langdon L-472 langdon@lll-lcc.ARPA Physics Department 339650%d@nmfecc.ARPA Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Livermore, CA 94550 (415) 422-5444 UUCP: ..{ihnp4,qantel,ucdavis,pyramid,styx,topaz}!lll-lcc!langdon ..{gymble,ll-xn,seismo}!lll-crg!lll-lccokemekol

A program called 'dvitty' is a dvi->ascii converter, we have it on the european unix user's group distribution tape. The dvi format is described in one of the documents on the tex distribution tape. -- Real-Name: Gertjan Vinkesteyn UUCP and other network: ..!seismo!mcvax!mhres!vns This note does not necessarily represent the position of Multihouse NV Therefore no liability or responsibility for whatever will be accepted.
