[comp.text] page numbers on odd/even foots in latex

 As a novice latex user I am having problems with getting
 the page numbers to appear in the foot of the left and right 
 sides of the page. I know how to do it on the head of the page
 (I think), but not in the foot. 

 Does anybody know how to do this ?
