[comp.text] H&S 2nd ed typesetting problems

henry@utzoo.UUCP (Henry Spencer) (08/06/87)

I note with disapproval that Harbison&Steele, 2nd edition, has apparently
been typeset by the authors rather than by the publishers, *and it shows*.
Don't get me wrong, I personally favor author typesetting, *if* the author
knows how to do it right. Whoever did the typesetting for H&S2 didn't.
Most of it is okay, but things like the atrocities in mathematical notation
on page 130 (hyphen -- so small that it almost disappears -- used instead
of minus, and a superscript set so high that it practically collides with
the previous line) are clear indications that whoever set the stuff up
didn't really know how. Grr. It's this sort of thing that gives author
typesetting a bad name.
