Hi, I'm looking for a better method to handle research notes and bibliographies (on an IBM AT system running MSDOS). For notes, I'd like to have the ability to search for keywords or associate subject headings with note files. Unfortunately, most textual databases I've heard of store text in ASCII form or their own peculiar format, and are not directly compatible with word processor files (I use Word Perfect). I can live with ASCII text, though, if I have to. I also understand that some textual database programs are designed primarily for searching unchanging text (e.g. the Bible), but research notes get added to or modified once in a while, so I wouldn't want to get a program in which re-indexing changed notes was too hard or time-consuming. For bibliographies, I've tried SCIMATE, but I'm not yet convinced enough that it's what I want to commit all my references to it. I've considered using a general-purpose database (e.g. DBASE or RBASE), but I'm not sure that's the way to go, either. Any help or hints would be appreciated, especially from people who've found particular programs effective in managing large research projects involving many written sources. -- Jon Dart Dept. of Anthropology, C-001 University of California, San Diego La Jolla, CA 92093 (619)-534-4145 dart%sdcc3@sdcsvax.UCSD.EDU
