[net.music] The Most Horrible of the Classics

lin (05/15/82)

1. The Iron Foundry, written by an officially supported Soviet
composer during the 1950's, this composition, which has been
recorded, is suggestive of events in a foundry.

2. Ballet Mechanique by George Antheil, written during the
earlier part of the 20th Century as part of the futurist
movement. The performance was promoted by Ezra Pound.

3. L's G.A. (for voice reading through a helium mask and
for tape.) The text is Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
It sounds like hordes of brain-damaged people reading it.

Actually, "The Iron Foundry" is considered a classic of orchestration
because of the innovative techniques used to make a symphony orchestra
sound reasonably like an iron foundry. I have been looking for a modern
recording of it for years. Any pointers would be well appreciated
