[comp.text] Lamport's alltt environment

I have problems with alltt environment. My text file is:

\documentstyle[alltt]{article}
\begin{document}
\begin{alltt}
\end{alltt}
\end{document}

and latex returns the following error message:
...
) (alltt.sty) (y.aux)
! Undefined control sequence.
\alltt ... \obeylines \tt \catcode ``=13 \@noligs 
                                                  \let \do \@makeother \docs...
l.3 \begin{alltt}
                 
I don't know tex codes at all. Anyone of you encountered this problem
and know the solution? Thanks.
