[comp.text] How do I get neqn to work?

Hi (again :-)!

Does anyone out there know about Neqn?  I can do super scripts under
nroff with my printer, but neqn just produces garbage for this file:

This is a test a message\*F and this is too.
.FS
This was a footnote
.FE
.PP
.EQ
x sub i = y sup 2
.EN

I run it with neqn <file> | nroff -mm -T<printer> | lp

The footnote superscript is OK, but why the eqn problems.  Does eqn 
use PLOT motions and not half-line motions.
