Is there a way of having verbatim but have > it execute the commands within (ie. \tt + carriage returns + imbedded > italics and boldface) ??? I am trying to convert a Scribe document to > LaTeX and even with the scribe-TeX filter (which doesn't do too much), > I am having a hard time. You may want to try setting \obeylines\frenchspacing instead of using verbatim mode. This will make all spaces equal and make all carriage returns into \par's so that line breaks go where you put them. If you use a proportionally spaced font, you are that much closer to verbatim but still maintaining the ability to imbed in TeX commands. A final feat would be to make spaces active and make vertical spaces fixed-length, check out the definition of \verbatim in latex.tex for more info.
