You may want to try setting \obeylines\frenchspacing instead of using
verbatim mode.  This will make all spaces equal and make all carriage
returns into \par's so that line breaks go where you put them.  If
you use a proportionally spaced font, you are that much closer to
verbatim but still maintaining the ability to imbed in TeX commands.
A final feat would be to make spaces active and make vertical spaces
fixed-length, check out the definition of \verbatim in latex.tex
