[comp.text] Rich Text Format -- where can I get a spec?

chip@ateng.UUCP (Chip Salzenberg) (03/23/88)

I have been looking into document interchange formats. Recently I ran into
a reference to a "Rich Text Format" invented by Microsoft. From what I've
heard, this is a straight ASCII representation of a complete MS-Word
document, formatting info and all.

Where can I get a spec for this format? I'll appreciate any info (even
rumor (-: ) that you can send.

Write to Microsoft's Rich Text group, at company headquarters (I don't have
the address handy). They'll send you a copy. I got one a while back (well,
actually, I got half of one -- it was one side of a two sided copy. Talk
about QA problems!) and it looks pretty neat. One REAL nice thing about this
is that you can take a text only application, like HyperCard, and teach it
to output a file that can be read into Word in a formatted form, so you can
(indirectly) do typeface styles. Neat stuff.
