[comp.text] Phonetic symbols in LaTeX

cdlee@iuvax.cs.indiana.edu (04/19/88)

Can anyone out there help me?
I'm using LaTeX to write my term paper.
Everything works fine, except one thing.
I cannot write out phonetic symbols.
What shall I do?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Some people suggested me to design my own symbols
using METAFONT.
Has anybody made IPA symbols?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Apart from the obvious suggestion about faking them with overstrikes, I just
had a GREAT IDEA! A lot of phonetic symbols are inverted letters--the best
known example is the "schwa," or inverted "e".

So just specify an "e" in 10-point Roman--at magnification minus-one!
I wish everything in TeX was so easy. O |-)

Washington State University is distributing IPA fonts for TeX. They charge
$75, if I remember right. Contact them at:
