Does anyone know of any work that has looked at the relative frequencies of non-alphanumeric characters in text? For example, are colons more frequent than semi-colons? Are apostrophes more common than commas? And so on. Of course, this is bound to vary depending on the kind of text looked at (mathematical text will obviously have more mathematical characters than non-mathematical texts, for example), but any pointers to statistics in this area would be of interest.
